“Isn’t it amazing when the Fourth of July comes around that people seem to think everyone wants to go swimming, wear shorts and do things outdoors? I felt like I was the only one who didn’t. I was miserable. I was miserable in a bathing suit, I was miserable in shorts, and I was convinced that my internal body temperature was off the thermometer. Miserable – just plain miserable. “ – Judy
I can remember my last Fourth of July before bariatric surgery. I trudged next door to my neighbor’s back patio with my potato salad and beans, wearing jeans and an oversized t-shirt. Everyone was playing and having a wonderful time. They were playing horseshoes, bean bag toss and swimming! SWIMMING? Really? They were in bathing suits and were splashing around playing pool volleyball. The pool looked so inviting and everyone was having a good time. I sat there having a bit of a pity party. I didn’t even own a bathing suit that really fit and I wouldn’t be seen in public, even if I did.
Everyone had arrived and the buffet looked extremely tasty. My thought was, “I can eat and leave. I will just get a plate of food, eat and then go home. Get back in the air conditioning and watch TV.” This is exactly what I did. Only trouble, I was still miserable. I could hear everyone still having a good time–the kids giggling and squealing and the adults having bursts of laughter.
It was then that I decided I would not spend another Fourth of July being miserable. In September of that year, I became a pre-bariatric patient, meeting the necessary criteria to have bariatric surgery by the end of November. By the next Fourth of July, I was wearing my capri pants and a comfy blouse. I was already 100 pounds lighter. I still didn’t go swimming, but I didn’t eat and hide either. I sat and enjoyed the company of friends and had a wonderful Fourth of July.
